Mourning Widows
February 23, 2001 - The Webster Theatre - Hartford, CT
Report and Photographs by Henry Bocanegra

Mourning Widows, the trippy hard rock power trio fronted by former Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt blew the roof off the Webster Theater with a groovy, funky, guitar-oriented set that consisted mostly of new material from Mourning Widow's sophomore release Furnished Souls For Rent.

Nuno and his band, bassist Donovan Bettencourt and drummer Jeff Consi, aimed to please the eager crowd as they delivered an impressive, energetic set that had the crowd in a frenzy for most of the evening. The intensity of Consi's drumming was definitely a highlight as he kicked the shit out of those drums throughout the whole set, not easing up for one second.

Attitude was the name of the game as Nuno's performance showed shades of an angry young man. Shred was also the name of the game, with Nuno playing his fingers off for the crowd - the man is definitely an incredible guitar player.

Although chants of "Freebird" (?!?), "More Than Words" (which drew a dirty look from Nuno), and "Hole Hearted" were solidly present, Nuno strictly stuck to his post-extreme material.

On a side note, present and showing his support from the side of the stage was Godsmack frontman Sully Erna. Both Godsmack and Mourning Widows are managed by former Extreme drummer Paul Geary.

All in all, it was rockin' evening. Definitely check out Mourning Widows when they come to town.
