If you thought the era of power trios was over, think again,
'cause here comes IronHead. Led by monster axe-slinger Steve
Rutledge, who is one of the best up and coming guitar players
I've heard in a long time, IronHead is a very cool blend
of all things Rock. There's a little Prog, a little Blues,
a little Metal, and lots of shred. Steve Rutledge is a guitar
god in the makings -- people need to check this guy out.
Seriously. His style is heavy, yet very melodic, the makings
of guitar bliss. Just check out the catchy hooks of "My
Hog and Me," or the blazing riffs and smokin' solos
of "Highway 22," and you'll see precisely what
I'm talking about.
A Glimpse... offers a collection of well-written,
well-performed songs and instrumental jams galore. Bassist/vocalist
Kevin Lamkins and drummer Dave Kelly form a tight unit that
rips on its own, but also totally complements Rutledge's
screaming guitar chops. Lamkins' bass lines are inventive
and fresh sounding a la Geddy Lee or Tony Levin and Kelly's
drum chops are all there; the man's a cymbal maniac! The
vocals could use a little polishing, or perhaps need some
harmonies, but then again like many great bands, the vocals
aren't really the focal point. Bottom line, it works.
If you're a fan of great guitar work, inventive bass lines,
and tight, thunderous drumming, you need a healthy, heavy
dose of IronHead.
