The latest release by Kanary (a new California-based band)
entitled "Porno Church of The Ugly Man"(gotta
love that title!!) is a collection of 12 songs that showcase
their unique brand of hook-based melodic pop-rock. On tracks
like "After," "Wish," and the infectious
"Excuse Me Pardon Me" Kanary almost sound like
a rebellious, more guitar-driven version of The Go-Go's.
But there's a lot more to this band, they go into several
styles throughout this CD. The title track ventures into
Melissa Etheridge territory, "Never Coming Down"
and "Lost Weekend" remind you of the type of blues
that a girl named Janis used to sing, while "Moose
& Squirrel" takes you into Alanis land. The beauty
of it is that they manage to do this while still maintaining
a high level of originality, which is a rare thing these
days.
Guitars and Vocals are aptly handled by Leslie Knauer,
and let me tell you this woman has it all, she wails on
the guitar, has a terrific voice (check out her pipes on
"Praying"), and can write some songs too. Her
partner in crime is Bassist/Songwriter Mary Kay whose Bass
playing is excellent and whose voice totally complements
Knauer's. Drums are handled by Tony Matteucci who sometimes
sounds a bit too tinny for my taste, but still handles the
beats appropriately.
All in all, "Porno Church of The Ugly Man" is
an upbeat, radio-friendly CD that's a lot of fun to listen
to and certainly better than most of the stuff that clogs
the airwaves these days. Fans of catchy hooks, good melodic
guitar, and stong female vocals will definitely be pleased.
Give it a chance.
