Star People are one of the most interesting indie bands
around. And I am short-changing them by calling them a "band."
They aren't just a band, they're an "experience"
a group of musicians with a clear vision who dare to be
different. From the moment you hear the intro of the Zappa-esque
"Hocus Pocus" you are intrigued by this band's
unique brand of Alien Prog-Rock, and once again I must say
that I am short-changing them by trying to define their
musical genre. They have yet to completely find themselves
as a band, but once they do, it will probably be the birth
of a new genre. Of course, having scored the opening gig
on the last Dream Theater tour gives them instant credibility
in my book.
If I were to define Star People in one word, I would use
"Interesting." Their songs are intriguing, well-written,
and diverse. The low baritone vocals are a little hard to
get used to, and they're not for everyone. That being said,
I'm looking forward to checking out their live set, it should
be a lot of fun. Another plus is the presence of the lovely
Star Girl (Lorenza Ponce from Sheryl Crow's touring band)
on violin and backing vocals. My one complaint about that
is that you don't hear enough of her. All in all, Star
People ...Are Coming is definitely worth a listen or
two. Fans of Alien Rock and interesting progressive music
should definitely hook up their interstellar com-links and
make contact.
