For those of you wondering what former Manowar
shredder Ross "The Boss" Friedman is up to these
days, wonder no more, for The Spinatras are here. A fun,
Melodic Punk-Metal outfit, The Spinatras are probably closer
to Motley Crue, Poison or The Offspring than Manowar, but
that's not necessarily a bad thing. From the upbeat opener
"Michelle" (MetalGod's Pick)
to the drum-heavy closer "Guess again," @Midnight.com
gives you a good dose of straight-ahead Punk-driven Rock.
The Spinatras do have a "modern" rock sound as
well, but it's done tastefully while still maintaing a good
sense of melody.
While this sound is not very original per
se, what makes The Spinatras different is that they do draw
from several good influences like The Ramones, The Crue,
Poison and others in that vein. If there's one thing that
makes this band and record good is Ross Friedman's phenomenal
guitar playing. Believe me, when I heard that Ross The Boss
was in a Punk-Rock band, I was a little thrown off, but
Friedman's lead guitar playing has remained intact, fast,
and heavy as usual. His solos on tracks like "My World,"
"Ketchup," "Dog," and "@Midnight.com"
are nothing short of exceptional. That being said, I almost
wonder if his guitar talents could be put to better use
in a different, perhaps heavier band.
Joining Friedman's party is vocalist Brian
Corley, who does a pretty good job; he sounds a little like
Vince Neil, a little like Bret Michaels, and a little like
the Offspring. In other words, his voice totally fits this
style of music. Ron Giordano handles the Bass and also plays
cello. Yes, you heard right, cello, a very cool thing. Richie
Fazio handles the drums in very cool fashion, as if he was
on speed at all times!
Overall, @Midnight.com is not going
to blow you away with its musical virtuosity (except for
Friedman's soloing), but it is a fun record and a must if
you're into Punk or Modern Rock.
