One Night Only marks the return of
one of the most underrated yet influential bands in Hard
Rock history - Thin Lizzy. But is it really Thin Lizzy without
frontman/songwriter Phillip Lynott? Well, not really, but
with Lizzy mainstays John Sykes and Scott Gorham leading
the way one can't help but think that Lynott would have
approved. Plus the record smokes!
One Night Only is more like a tribute
to Thin Lizzy than a reunion. The band burns through a whole
set of Lizzy classics like "Jailbreak," "Suicide,"
and "Bad Reputation" in fiery fashion as John
Sykes purposely emulates Lynott's voice to perfection; it's
spooky sometimes, but in a good way. Sykes also provides
the bulk of the lead guitar work, and like fine wine, he
gets better with age. Just check out the classic "Cold
Sweat." Scott Gorham's axe mastery complements Sykes'
shredding style completely and those guitar harmonies are
heavenly.
Rounding out the album are Lizzy alumni Darren
Wharton on keys and vocals alond with Sykes' Blue Murder
cohort Marco Mendoza on Bass and vocals. Former Ozzy/Whitesnake
drummer Tommy Aldridge provides the thunderous drums, but
his style is quite different than Lizzy drummer Brian Downey
and while Aldridge is an awesome drummer, Downey's drums
are a pivotal part of Lizzy's sound and he is missed. The
production is average, even lackluster at times as some
leads get buried in the mix, but don't let that stop you
from scoring this gem, the music and vibe of it more than
make up for it.
One Night Only serves the purpose of
keeping the legend of Thin Lizzy and Phillip Lynott alive
while hopefully turning a new generation on to the musical
prowess, poetic lyrics and incredible magic of a truly amazing
band.
