As a music journalist, I am seldom impressed
by a "new" band, especially if they're signed
to a major label (given the state of mainstream music today).
But when I first laid ears to the opening chords of No
Pleasantries and heard Shawn Albro's powerful pipes
I was truly impressed. Albro's amazing range reminds me
of Ian Astbury (The Cult) and Chris Cornell (Soundgarden),
with bits of Layne Stayley (Alice In Chains), Bruce Dickinson
(Iron Maiden), and Ronnie James Dio. Needless to say, the
guy can sing!
Like I mentioned before, the first thing that
will blow your mind about No Pleasantries is Shawn
Asbro's amazing voice, but after a few listens, you will
also be blown away by the sheer strength of the songs. "Godless"
should be a smash hit, as it is one of the best songs I've
EVER heard. Other highlights are "Circle Of Life,"
the hook-filled "My Life," and the catchy (pun
intended) "Catch The Sun."
Although No Pleasantries is not a shredfest,
it's a very solid, song-oriented record, the solos fit the
songs perfectly and the bottom line is -these guys can play!
Guitarist Chris Weber is very good, his rhythms and melodic
fills show a perfect blend of heaviness and melody. Drummer
Tommy Holt has an awesome Bonham-like sound and he can tear
it up. Bassist Benjamin Shirley is also very solid and has
a dark, heavy sound.
While today's music is not as much about singing
as it is about rapping or whining (which is the same thing),
U.P.O.'s powerful sound is a breath of fresh air -heavy,
guitar-oriented grooves and melodic, powerful vocals. This
is the kind of band that fans of rockin' heavy music should
be supporting. Supporting a new rock band like U.P.O. (which
is not following trends) sends the major labels a definite
message, plus it's a great CD. Now go out and discover No
Pleasantries!
