Twisted Sister were Metal Pioneers. Led by
the eccentric, outspoken and charismatic Dee Snider, Twisted
Sister were partially responsible for blowing the doors
open for the Metal genre in the 80's. Their music was ballsy
and rebellious, their image was shocking (imagine 5 NFL
Linebackers in drag) and their videos were visionary. Even
to this day, Twisted Sister continues to be cited as an
influence by musicians from many different genres. With
Twisted Forever, some of these musicians pay tribute
to a band that most of them grew up listening to and still
love and respect - Twisted "Fucking" Sister!!!
Let's go track by track:
1. I Wanna Rock (Lit) - Putting this version of the
song at the beginning of the album was a big mistake as
I almost threw it out in disgust. There isn't a a more overrated
band on Earth than Lit and it shows in this version as the
song is totally ruined, not as much by the music but by
the poor excuse for a singer that calls himself A.J. Popoff
(perhaps some Male hormones would help).
*We will now break for a Public Dis-service
Announcement*
The following is a step-by-step course that details how
YOU can sing EXACTLY like the singer of Lit:
Step 1: Pinch your nose.
Step 2: Pretend you're a 12 year old girl.
Step 3: Start Whining.
2. Shoot 'Em Down (Motorhead) - During
my years as a music fan and journalist, I've come to learn
that pretty much anything that involves Motorhead or Lemmy
(is GOD) is going to rock. This is no exception as Lemmy
(is GOD) and Co. deliver an ass-kickin' performance.
3. The Kids Are Back (Nashville Pussy)
- A rockin' southern-flavored version.
4. The Price (Nine Days) - This is
the Pop-Ballad version which shows the versatility of this
song. They pull it off quite well, it's a little different,
but very cool.
5. Wake Up The Sleeping Giant (Chuck D)
- The Rap version also showcases the versatility of the
song. I'm not a Rap fan, but Chuck D does a good job with
the song. At the very least, you'll get a chuckle out of
it.
6. Destroyer (Anthrax) - This is very
heavy and very cool. Jon Bush's growl rocks.
7. Under The Blade (Overkill) - Heavy,
but not as good as I expected, Blitz doesn't pull it off
that well.
8. The Fire Still Burns (Cradle of Filth)
- Very different, but cool. You can feel the E-V-I-L in
this one.
9. Don't let Me Down (Vision of Disorder)
- Sounds like a Poor Man's Marilyn Manson.
10. Burn In Hell (The Step Kings) -
Cool version, funky.
11. Ride To Live/Live To Ride (Fu Manchu)
- A snoozefest. ZZZzzzzzz...
12. We're Not Gonna Take It (Joan Jett)
- I really hated this version of the song. It lacks the
necessary attitude, and the backing vocals are horrible.
13. You Can't Stop Rock N' Roll (Sebastian
Bach) - Baz rocks! Talk about selecting a perfect song
for him. Easily the best song on the CD.
14. We're Gonna Make It (Hammerfall)
- This stays true to the original. Good version of the song.
15. I Am/I'm Me (Sevendust) - The Thrash
Metal version! This plays like if the Sex Pistols were playing
one of Anthrax's old songs. Fast, furious, sloppy, and wicked
cool.
16. Sin City (Twisted Sister) - The
Metal Legends themselves reunite to cover this AC/DC classic.
They still WANNA ROCK, but so do WE! Will this track will
be enough to hold us over until the R-E-U-N-I-O-N?
What can I say? I Love Twisted Sister! Stay
Hungry was the first Metal album I ever bought. Twisted
Forever is definitely worth picking up as there are
a couple of gems and plenty of Twisted for SMF's like YOU
and ME to enjoy.
